Exploregon is a web-based exploration and education application with a game aspect to engage users to explore their surroundings. Several data sets are used and can be toggled to tailor the application to the interests of the user. Such data sets include: heritage trees, public art, historic buildings and historic sites. Exploregon encourages you to go out and interact with your environment. Using geo-location, Exploregon awards points when you come within range of a site-of-significants (be it a tree or building or art). When in range, you will recieve an SMS, tweet or email encouraging you to interact with the site. You receive bonus points for answering trivia questions and clearing a neighborhood of all significant sites.

Anyone visiting or living in Oregon (and/or Portland, OR) who wishes to explore and learn more about heritage trees, public art, historic buildings and other sites of cultural interest in Portland and surrounding Oregon.

Visitors and residence of Oregon will have a better appreciate for their surroundings.
What is the specific need that is addressed by the app?:
Often times we are either unaware of the significants of the world around us. We past by trees, buildings, intersections and other cultural artifacts without nary a thought about who or what they are or their place in our society. Exploregon challenges you to go exploring and learn more about your surroundings.
Anticipated usage of the app (by whom, under what circumstances, etc)?:
Exploregon will likely be used by tourists to Portland, OR as a way to sightsee
How is information presented, that's not presented elsewhere; how is it unique?:
Using geo-location, Exploregon only makes relevant what is near you. When you get close to something, it contacts you and engages you. Yes, talking trees!
What are a few of the primary strengths of the design?:
Simple interface to lots of data. Fun interaction compels users to continue exploring father, venturing to new neighborhoods and beyond!
