pdx.py is a geodjango project that facilitates the creation of applications for the Portland area. It contains models for accessing the data released as part of the civicapps program, as well as an interface for editing the attributes and geographic features.

This project is intended to jumpstart the development of Portland based web applications using civicapps data. Django and it's GIS extensions provide an incredibly effective framework for developing spatially aware web applications in python. pdx.py will handle the initial development grunt needed to get started.

Targeted demographic (who app is intended for): Web developers. Anyone interested in developing web applications using civicapps data

Specific need that is addressed by app: Jumpstart the creation of web apps for the Portland area by localizing an existing development framework.

Anticipated usage (by whom, under what circumstances, etc): This project provides the building blocks for creating GIS web apps with civicapps data. pdx.py eliminates the tedious part of writing a data access and presentation layer as well as transforming and loading information into a geodatabase.

Who and what will be impacted by the app, and how: This project should make it easier to for average web programmers to get started writing spatially aware applications.

How information is presented, that's not presented elsewhere; how it is unique: This is not intended for end users.

Strengths of the design: Rather than creating a hosted service for accessing civicapps data, this project takes a decentralized approach to allow any programmer to build their own applications. Anything built with pdx.py stands alone and is not dependent on an external service.
